Restoration Works on the Granary

Published: 17.10.2025

On September 17, 2025, urgent restoration works began on the two-cell granary from 1828, which was damaged in a fire on December 29, 2024. The granary is located within the open-air museum complex at the Zaprice Museum. The restoration was carried out in accordance with the project conditions set by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia, Kranj Regional Office (ZVKDS OE Kranj), and the responsible conservator, Dr. Mojca Tercelj Otorepec. The works were carried out by Tesarstvo Justin Klanšek s.p. and Pokrivanje slamnatih streh – Janez Golnar s.p.

In the first phase, the granary was lifted, leveled, and placed on new point supports, which enabled the stabilization of the entire structure. The charred corner structure was replaced with new beams that were traditionally processed and properly dried, ensuring adequate load-bearing capacity and authenticity. Due to the damaged joints, which seriously threatened the stability of the structure, the execution of these works was essential for the safety of the entire granary. Furthermore, the damaged ceilings and floors in both cells were replaced, along with the front boards, and a new roof structure with battens was constructed. The damaged entrance door was cleaned, reinforced, and restored, as was the longitudinal wooden threshold in front of the entrance.

On October 1, 2025, master craftsman Janez Golnar began covering the new thatched roof, which was completed under the supervision of the responsible conservator on October 8, 2025. The new roof was constructed using traditional techniques (materials, method of thatching), which restored the granary’s original appearance from the first half of the 19th century.

Funding for the restoration was provided by insurance compensation and emergency funds from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia.
