Museum Evening: Bojan Pollak - Makalu 1975
October 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the Yugoslav expedition (JAHO VI) to Makalu.
The members of the expedition were: Aleš Kunaver (leader), Janko Ažman, Stane Belak-Šrauf, Zoran Bešlin, Danilo Cedilnik, Janez Dovžan, Boris Erjavec, Viktor-Viki Grošelj, Tomaž Jamnik, Stane Klemenc, Ivan Kotnik, Jazen Lončar, Marjan Manfreda-Marjon, Dr. Damijan Meško, Bojan Pollak, Miran Rebula, Radovan Riedl, Roman Robas, Jože Rožič, Dušan Srečnik, and Nejc Zaplotnik.
The 1975 Makalu expedition was the greatest achievement of Yugoslav alpinism in the Himalayas.
Marjan Manfreda was the first person to reach the altitude of 8,484 meters without supplemental oxygen. Together with Belak, he was the first to reach the summit on October 6. In the following days (October 8, 10, and 11), other climbers followed: Ažman and Zaplotnik, Grošelj and Kotnik, and Dovžan.
Bojan Pollak will present this unique expedition through slides, most of which he took himself, and share many untold stories from the journey.
Viki Grošelj will also present his new book, published on the 50th anniversary of the ascent:
“Makalu 8481 m – The First Slovenian Eight-Thousander and the Time After.”
