2nd Olga Zupan Symposium | Vlasto Kopač – Heritage for the Future
On November 12, 2026, the 2nd Olga Zupan Symposium will take place at the ZVKDS Kranj Regional Office. This year, the symposium will be dedicated to the architect and humanist Vlasto Kopač (1913–2006).
Throughout the year, various events have been held as part of the project Vlasto Kopač – Spatial Creator, Guardian of Heritage and Memory. These events presented the numerous areas of his activity and highlighted the significance of his work for the Slovenian space, cultural landscape, and collective memory. In June 2026, an excellent monograph was published, revealing many lesser-known areas of his work to the public and presenting him through the broad lens of various fields in the humanities. The common denominator of his creation and the connecting thread of most of his projects is heritage—both cultural and natural, movable, immovable, and intangible.
As the concluding event of the “Kopač Year,” we will gather final thoughts on his legacy with an eye toward the future. With this symposium, we aim to extract and emphasize his contribution to heritage preservation through the prism of modern times.
The primary goal of the symposium is to provide a multidisciplinary view of Kopač’s approach and his concept of spatial heritage protection. We would like to highlight his vision in areas that remain relevant today, reflect on his preservation principles, and consider whether the term “cultural landscape” can be upgraded or elevated to the national level within the legal framework of heritage protection.
The symposium will be divided into two thematic sessions:
-
- I. An Overview of Kopač’s Work in Light of Cultural and Natural Heritage Preservation
- II. Conservation Session
You are cordially invited to join us!
