Nataša Mirtič - A Retrospective: Imprint

Nataša Mirtič’s artistic practice has been devoted primarily to printmaking since the very beginning of her career, focusing on traditional intaglio techniques such as etching, aquatint and drypoint. Over the years, she has developed a technically highly accomplished and visually distinctive style based on recycling, or reusing, her own printing plates, which she further develops and enhances, combining them with newer plates to create compositions governed by a rigorous geometric order.

The exhibition review : impression is conceived as a small-scale retrospective. Marking a personal milestone, the artist presents a representative selection of works spanning the period from the end of her studies, when she completed her master’s degree in printmaking at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana under Professor Lojze Logar, to her most recent prints. The exhibited works synthesise the artist’s visual poetics and eloquently demonstrate a considered and continuous process of development. Her stylistic transformations, with only minor deviations, remain within the realm of the reduction of representational forms.

Nataša Mirtič (1973) graduated from the Painting Department at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana in 1997, where she studied under Professor Andrej Jemec. In 2001, she completed her master’s degree in printmaking under Professor Lojze Logar. She has participated in numerous exhibitions and selections of Slovenian printmaking in Slovenia and abroad. Her work has received several awards and distinctions. She has held the status of an independent cultural professional since 2001. She lives and works as a freelance artist in Novo mesto.
