Study Group Once Upon a Time in Kamnik

You are invited to the opening meeting of the study group Once Upon a Time in Kamnik, in which we explore the history of Kamnik together, discover interesting stories about its inhabitants, learn about different parts of the town, and recall times that have somewhat faded from memory.

Through visits to exhibitions, tours of interesting places around the town, and meetings with various guest lecturers, this year we will once again explore, discuss and, above all, look back into the past with curiosity. The theme of this year’s study programme will be Our Childhood.

The group will be led by Marko Kumer and Zora Torkar.

At the October Maister Evening, he will present Kralj’s courageous resistance to fascism through his paintings in churches stretching from Trieste to the Holy Mount of Višarje, at a time when, following the Treaty of Rapallo of 1920, as much as a third of Slovenian territory remained under Italian rule.

Opening of the Panel Exhibition

Folk Sculptor Lovrenc Erzar from Nasovče near Komenda

From the collections of the Kamnik Intermunicipal Museum and the Slovene Ethnographic Museum.

Lovrenc Erzar (1835–1903) was a self-taught artist. From an early age, he was fascinated by the rich Baroque art found in the surrounding churches. Using ordinary knives, he carved distinctive figures of Christ, the Virgin Mary, saints and angels, as well as various decorative elements. He became particularly well known for his so-called house altars, which adorned some farmhouses in the surrounding area. His carvings bring together folk creativity, faith and a love of wood.

Exhibition curator: Zora Torkar, MMK
Collaborator: Bojana Rogelj Škafar, Slovene Ethnographic Museum

Nataša Mirtič, Review: Imprint

“The exhibited works synthesise the artist’s visual poetics and eloquently demonstrate a deliberate and continuous development and stylistic transformation, which, with minor deviations, nevertheless remain within the field of reducing objectness,” writes exhibition curator Jasna Kocuvan Štukelj.

The exhibition was created in cooperation with the Dolenjska Museum Novo Mesto and Jakčev Dom.
